Manhunt only works if the whole group can play. That includes friends who use VoiceOver or a keyboard, friends who need big text or high contrast, friends who are colorblind, and friends playing one-handed in the dark. This page says what works today, how we test it, and what we still have to fix.

This website

We aim for WCAG 2.2 level AA on every page of manhuntgame.com, and for the stricter AAA contrast level on body text.

  • Contrast. Body text is at least 7:1 against the background. The orange buttons are 6.2:1, which passes AA but not AAA.
  • Keyboard. Every link and control can be reached with Tab and shows a yellow focus ring. The first stop is a “Skip to content” link. A table that is wider than your screen can be focused and scrolled with the arrow keys.
  • Screen readers. Each page has one main heading and a heading outline, and the navigation is labelled. Tables have column headers, plus row headers where the first column names the row. Every diagram has a written description.
  • Zoom and text size. Pages reflow to a 320-pixel-wide screen, to 200% zoom and to 200% text size without scrolling sideways. At large sizes the header stops following you down the page, so it doesn’t cover what you’re reading.
  • Motion. The only animation, a ping on the home page map, is off when your device asks for reduced motion.
  • High contrast. Pages follow Windows contrast themes and the “Increase contrast” setting on Apple devices.
  • Print. Every page prints its text black on white (diagrams print as they look on screen), and the printable rules fit on one page.

In September 2026 we audited every page with axe-core and Lighthouse, walked each one with the keyboard, and checked reflow, zoom, text size, text spacing, high contrast and print. Every build of the site now checks the basics automatically: a skip link, one main heading, image descriptions, labelled tables and form fields, and named links and buttons. The site is dark on purpose, to match the app, which is played at dusk.

The Manhunt IRL app

The iPhone app is on the App Store. What already works in it:

  • Most text is built on Dynamic Type, so it follows your text size and Bold Text settings.
  • Icon-only buttons have VoiceOver labels. On the lobby’s invite card the game code is read letter by letter, and live countdowns are read as “2 minutes 30 seconds”, not as a clock time.
  • On the map, hunters are triangles, runners are circles and caught runners are barred squares, so nobody has to tell red from blue to know who is who.
  • The heartbeat pulse, the radar on the home screen and the role reveal stop animating when Reduce Motion is on.
  • Game sounds come with a vibration, and most also show a message on screen. During the hunt, a free runner’s phone stays silent unless headphones are in.

What we are still fixing (as of September 27, 2026):

  • The map is the only way to find jail and the edge of the zone. VoiceOver can’t yet say “Jail, 120 meters northwest”.
  • The “hunter nearby” heartbeat vibrates and shows on screen, but VoiceOver doesn’t speak it yet.
  • At the largest accessibility text sizes, some in-game buttons and parts of the safety sheet are cut off.
  • A few colored banners have text that is too faint in bright sun.
  • Several events share the same vibration, so you can’t always tell them apart with the phone in your pocket.
  • Reduce Motion doesn’t yet stop the sliding banners, screen transitions and lobby animations.
  • A ping shows on the map but has no text message yet, and the final horn has no banner.

The browser game

The browser version at manhuntgame.com/play has a Map details button during the lobby and live game. It opens a text description of jail or base, the zone, and the player spots and ping circles currently shown on the map. Directions are compass directions and straight-line estimates from a recent GPS reading, not walking routes. A missing, old or imprecise GPS reading is called out instead of giving a misleading direction.

The description uses the same information as the visual map. It keeps hidden field locations hidden, describes ping circles with their radius and age, and labels scrambled signals. It does not turn a fuzzy ping into a player’s exact location. The dialog supports keyboard navigation and Escape to close, and its text updates without moving focus. A safety pause or tag confirmation takes priority.

In the simulated demo game, Map details also contains Demo walking buttons. Tab to a direction and press Enter or Space to walk 15 meters, or choose Stop walking. Movement is gradual, and pausing or ending the demo clears the destination. These controls move only the local demo player.

If your device asks for reduced motion, the browser map turns off animated camera moves, zoom transitions, tile fades and gliding after a drag. You can still pan, zoom and recenter the map. If you change this device setting while the game is open, refresh the page to apply it. Player positions and your chosen replay progress still update.

Map details covers the live map, not the end-of-game route replay. Replay descriptions and clearer marker shapes are still open work. We are checking the browser game against the same accessibility standard as the content site; we have not verified every flow with every screen reader.
