Apps to play Manhunt in real life, compared

By , builder of Manhunt IRL · Updated

The best Manhunt app is the one that fits your group: free for everyone who's playing, joinable by friends on Android or without the app, and fair about location. As of October 19, 2026, HideZone suits big mixed groups, Hunting Game suits small families, SCRAM and PlayCulture drive viral chase interest, and On The Run suits city-wide games. None of the released-app descriptions we checked explicitly describes the same classic jail-and-jailbreak rules. Other rescue mechanics exist, including HideZone's Freeze Tag.

Disclosure: we make Manhunt IRL, an app for playing Manhunt available on the iPhone App Store and playable in any web browser. We've left it out of the comparison table and described it separately at the end. Sources are official store listings and websites. The original comparison was checked September 27; SCRAM, PlayCulture, HideZone and SLAP were refreshed on October 19, 2026. Older rows remain dated snapshots, not a fresh check of every app. We haven't yet played every app in a full game; when we do, we'll add hands-on notes and date them. App makers: if anything here is wrong, email hello@manhuntgame.com and we'll fix it.

Checklist of five things to check before a group picks a Manhunt app: free for the whole group or only up to a player cap; whether Android friends and friends without the app can join; jail and jailbreak or only elimination; fair location that gives hunters enough to hunt with rather than a live dot on everyone; and whether you can play without an account.
The five questions that decide whether the whole group can actually play.

How to choose

  1. Count your group, then read the free tier. Free often means 4, 5 or 10 players. With 12 friends, that means someone pays or someone sits out.
  2. Check who can join. If one friend has an Android phone, an iPhone-only app leaves them out.
  3. Decide what game you're playing. Most apps play elimination hide and seek or tag. If your group plays Manhunt with a jail and jailbreaks, expect to run the jail yourselves.
  4. Look at what hunters see. A live dot on every runner ends hiding. Timed or fuzzy reveals keep it a game.
  5. Check accounts and public lobbies if younger players are in the group.
  6. Verify tag confirmation and dispute rules. When a chase gets close, apps with clear tag confirmation and dispute rulings prevent arguments over whether a tag counted.

Each app in detail

HideZone: GPS Hide & Seek

By Robin Morgenstern · HideZone on the App Store · Rating: 4.7 (35 US ratings; checked Oct 19)

Best for: Big mixed iPhone and Android groups that want lots of modes.

  • Good: The widest set of modes we found, including a Chase/Manhunt mode, hide and seek with a shrinking zone, zombie infection, sardines and murder mystery; iPhone and Android in the same game; and no account.
  • Watch out: Ads in the free version. Chase/Manhunt uses vague search zones, and Freeze Tag includes teammate rescues; a classic jail-and-jailbreak mode is not described.
  • Friends join by: Lobby ID.

Hunting Game

By Jasper Aelvoet · Hunting Game on the App Store · Rating: 4.8 (29 US ratings)

Best for: Small families who want a supervisor role.

  • Good: A Family mode with a referee or supervisor role, an Apple Watch app and a web spectator view.
  • Watch out: Four players on the free tier is small for Manhunt. Sign-in required.
  • Friends join by: Join code.

Manhunt: Hide & Seek

By Integrated Reality Labs · Manhunt on the App Store · Rating: 4.2 (74 US ratings)

Best for: Groups that want the most-established name.

  • Good: The app that owns the word "Manhunt" in the App Store, with Manhunt and Hide & Seek modes and a long feature list.
  • Watch out: Several information features sit behind the Pro subscription.
  • Friends join by: Groups managed in the app.

SLAP: Hide, Seek, Record

By Integrated Reality Labs · SLAP on the App Store · Rating: 4.6 (274 US ratings; checked Oct 19)

Best for: Creators who want to film elimination games.

  • Good: Records your game on video, with ghost roles and respawns. The most-rated app in this list.
  • Watch out: Paid power-ups, public lobbies and a live map of games worldwide. Check the settings before a younger group uses it.
  • Friends join by: Find friends in the app; public and private lobbies.

Hide Game (hide-app.com)

By Rogier Visser · Hide Game (hide-app.com) on the App Store · Rating: Too few ratings to show

Best for: Groups of up to 10 who want a shrinking zone.

  • Good: Normal, Extraction and Storm (shrinking area) modes, and only the host needs to pay for a big game.
  • Watch out: Ten players on the free tier.
  • Friends join by: Code or link.

On The Run: Hide and Seek

By Kristoffer Knape · On The Run on the App Store · Rating: Too few ratings to show

Best for: Adults playing across a whole city.

  • Good: Built for city-scale, Jet Lag-style games lasting hours, with timed reveals, dares and nearby-lobby discovery.
  • Watch out: iPhone only, on the newest iOS. No browser join.
  • Friends join by: Nearby phones see the lobby; others use a 5-digit code, link or QR code.

Prowl: Horror Hide & Seek IRL

By Adam Awad · Prowl on the App Store · Rating: 4.5 (11 US ratings); rated 18+

Best for: Adult horror nights.

  • Good: An asymmetric killers-versus-survivors game with tasks and an escape zone. Horror atmosphere.
  • Watch out: Rated 18+. Not updated for about a year when we checked.
  • Friends join by: Create or join a room.

SCRAM: Hide and Seek

By Moveera Pty Ltd · SCRAM official website · Rating: Google Play listing available; no rating average observed

Best for: Android groups interested in timed-ping hide and seek.

  • Good: Periodic location pings, a configurable head start, optional shrinking zone and team chat. Its Google Play listing is live; its website takes iPhone waitlist registrations.
  • Watch out: iPhone availability is still pending. We have not verified purchase limits or played a full round. Social followers and Reel views do not tell us how many people installed or joined the waitlist.
  • Friends join by: Six-character game code.

PlayCulture

By Ben Roper · PlayCulture official website · Rating: Social reach is not an app rating

Best for: Fans of POV survival runs and zombie infection chases.

  • Good: First-person tactical chase POV videos with high tension, zombie infection rules, and episodic survival gameplay.
  • Watch out: Its official website provides iPhone and Android downloads, game guides and community events. Review the rules and choose permitted, off-road play areas; videos alone do not establish every app feature.
  • Friends join by: See its game-specific setup guides.

No longer available: Gottcha (a GPS hide and seek app) no longer has a live App Store or Google Play page, so we've left it out.

Why we built Manhunt IRL

We built Manhunt IRL around a head start, a jail and jailbreaks. Other apps offer different rescue mechanics, including HideZone’s Freeze Tag; our focus is classic jail-and-jailbreak play, with three rules for ourselves: free for the whole group (up to 50 players, no paid tier, and nobody pays to see more of the map), nobody left out (one person hosts, from the iPhone app or a browser, and everyone else, Android included, joins from a link in their browser without an install or account), and the app is the referee (fuzzy location pings rather than live dots, confirmed tags, and a boundary that forgives GPS wobble). It has Classic Manhunt with jail and jailbreak, and an Infection mode. One person hosts, from the iPhone app (search MANHUNT IRL on the App Store) or a browser; everyone else can join from a browser. See how the app works.

Manhunt app questions

What is the best app to play Manhunt in real life?

It depends on your group. For big mixed iPhone and Android groups today, HideZone has the most modes and no account. For video creators, SLAP. For viral chase formats, SCRAM and PlayCulture showcase neighborhood and zombie chases (SCRAM is available on Android, with iPhone still waitlisted). For classic Manhunt with a real jail and jailbreak where anyone can join instantly from a browser link, Manhunt IRL is free for up to 50 players.

How does Manhunt IRL compare to SCRAM, PlayCulture, and HideZone?

SCRAM uses periodic GPS pings (available on Android, with an iPhone waitlist). PlayCulture focuses on first-person POV chase videos and zombie infection modes. HideZone offers multiple modes on iOS and Android with ads and a Pro upgrade for larger zones. Manhunt IRL is available on the iPhone App Store with instant browser play for Android (no download or account needed), is free for up to 50 players with no ads or paywalls, and includes heartbeat proximity radar, classic jailbreaks, and digital tag confirmation.

How do tag detection and referee rulings work in GPS manhunt apps?

Consumer GPS cannot reliably measure inches between two people running, so automated GPS collision tagging causes false tags. Instead, apps use manual claims or codes. In Manhunt IRL, a hunter taps 'Tag', which prompts the runner's screen to confirm or dispute. If disputed, an uninvolved referee has 20 seconds to rule, or the server checks distance. This keeps tags honest without arguing.

Is there a free Manhunt app?

Most Manhunt apps are free to download, but free usually means a player cap (4, 5 or 10 players) or ads, with a subscription for bigger games or more information. Manhunt IRL is free for up to 50 players with no ads, paywalls or paid power-ups.

Can Android and iPhone users play Manhunt together?

Yes, in apps that support both: HideZone, Hunting Game, Hide Game, PlayCulture and SLAP all have iPhone and Android versions. Manhunt IRL is built so anyone can join from any smartphone browser without installing anything, once one person hosts from the iPhone app or a browser.

Do you need an app to play Manhunt?

No. Manhunt needs a place, a jail and a timer. An app helps with the parts people argue about: when a round ends, whether a tag counted, where the boundary is, and runners who hide all game.
