Manhunt strategy: how to win as a runner or hunter

By Aryan, the Manhunt IRL team · Updated

Runners win Manhunt by moving at the right moments, not constantly: hide with an exit, relocate right after a hunter passes or right after a ping, and save a teammate with a well-timed jailbreak. Hunters win by splitting up, sweeping in lines, and pressuring the jail so that every runner is caught at the same time.

Manhunt looks like a running game, but most rounds are won by the team that thinks better. These tips work in any version of the game, with or without the Manhunt app. Where the app changes the tactics (mostly because of pings and the heartbeat), we say so.

Runner strategy

1. Hide with an exit

The best hiding spot isn’t the most hidden one. It’s one where you can see a hunter coming and still have two ways out. A dead-end corner is a trap. A spot behind a hedge with open ground on both sides is a base.

2. Get away, then get small

Use the head start to get away from jail, but don’t sprint to the very edge: experienced hunters check the boundary first. The safest spots early are between the middle and the edge, off the hunters’ obvious lines. Find cover and stop moving before the hunters arrive.

3. Freeze when they’re close

Human eyes are built to catch movement, especially at night. If a hunter is within sight, don’t move at all. Many runners are caught by twitching, not by being seen.

4. Move when they’ve just passed

The safest moment to relocate is right after a hunter has searched your area and moved on. They’ve “cleared” it in their head, and they won’t look back for a while.

5. Use the ping rhythm (app)

With the app, hunters see a circle around you at every ping, and you get a 10-second warning. That gives you a real decision:

  • Early in the game, pings are slow and circles are big. Staying hidden is strong.
  • Right after a ping is the best time to move: hunters are heading to where you were.
  • Later, circles get smaller and more frequent, and the last three circles stay on the hunters’ maps. If they overlap on the same spot, you’re easy to find. Staying in one place all game gets riskier every minute.

6. Read the heartbeat (app)

Your phone vibrates like a heartbeat when a hunter is within roughly 80 meters, faster at 50, and fastest at 25. It never tells you the direction. A rising heartbeat means stop and listen; a falling one means whoever it is is moving away. Use your ears to find the direction the app won’t give you.

7. Dress for it

Dark, quiet clothing. No reflective strips, no bright shoes, no jangling keys. Shoes with grip. At night, carry a small light for safety even if you never turn it on.

8. Don’t bunch up

Two runners hiding together are twice as likely to be found and can be caught in one sweep. Split up and meet only for a jailbreak.

9. Stay inside the boundary

Leaving the area doesn’t make you safe; it makes you caught. With the app, stepping out puts your live position on every hunter’s map for 30 seconds.

Jailbreak strategy

10. Wait for the swing

The best time to break out prisoners is when hunters have just left jail to chase someone. Watch jail from a distance and move when it’s empty.

11. Use a decoy

One runner shows themselves on the far side of jail and runs. When the guard chases, a second runner goes in for the break. This is the most reliable jailbreak in the game.

12. Commit fully

A half-committed jailbreak gets the rescuer caught too. When you go, go straight in. With the app, you have to stand inside jail and hold for 5 seconds, and every hunter’s phone sounds an alarm when you start, so approach from the side with the most cover and the longest distance from the nearest hunter.

13. Scatter after the break

Freed runners get 20 seconds of immunity in the app. Use it to go in different directions. A group running one way is one easy chase.

Hunter strategy

14. Split the map

Divide the area between hunters before the head start ends. “You take the north half, I’ll take the south” beats following each other around.

15. Sweep in lines

When two hunters search together, walk side by side, 10 to 20 meters apart, and sweep across an area. Runners who slip behind one hunter walk straight into the other.

16. Chase toward teammates

Don’t chase a runner into open space. Herd them toward another hunter or toward the boundary, where they have to stop or step out.

17. Check the edges early

Beginners use the head start to run as far from jail as they can. Sweep the boundary early, then work inward.

18. Look for what moves, listen for what doesn’t

Stop every few minutes and stand completely still. Runners who think you’ve gone start moving, and you’ll hear them.

19. Use pings like a detective (app)

A ping circle shows where a runner might be, almost never at its center. The runner is somewhere inside it. Don’t walk to the middle; walk the edges of the circle and check the best hiding spots inside it. When two or three old circles overlap, the runner has probably been camping in that overlap.

20. Don’t all chase one runner

Every hunter sprinting after the same person leaves the rest of the map, and the jail, wide open.

21. Guard jail late, not early

Early guarding wastes a hunter. In the last third of the game, when several runners are in jail, one hunter should stay within sight of it. In the app, any hunter within 35 meters of jail is visible to runners, so guard from just outside that ring and close in when you hear the jailbreak alarm.

22. Close the game in the final minute

In the app, the last 60 seconds is sudden death, with pings every 15 seconds. Hunters should already be spread out around the remaining runners’ last circles, ready to converge.

Both sides

23. Know the boundary

Walk it before the game. Hunters use it to trap runners; runners use it to know where they can’t go.

24. Talk quietly

Whispered calls and hand signals win games. Shouting “HE WENT LEFT” tells everyone where you are, too.

25. Play fair and stay safe

Touch tags only. No hiding anywhere private, near roads or up high. If someone says the safety word, everyone stops. A great game is one where everyone wants to play the next round.
